This past Saturday was a little on the chilly end, so Jade and Alan decided to try their luck coyote hunting.
They have been feeling the itch to get out there, and both being fairly well knowledgeable when it comes to deer hunting, both want do the same when it comes to coyotes and really get the ins and outs of hunting them.
Alan and Jade headed out around 6:20am. Jade saw a few coyotes but they didn’t come in close enough to take a clear shot. Alan said he didn’t get a chance the see them at all.
Other than some jokes, and a moment of missing (but later found) car keys, they came back to the house empty handed. When they returned to go to another location in the afternoon, this is when I (Michelle) tagged along. (I am the self-described support team, morale boost, and free photographer). 😉
We met up with Jade’s friend Hunter, to try our luck at a new location. Armed with a call and a Mojo decoy, we ventured out.
First things first, we set up the Mojo, and everyone found their places, and set up. We were at the location maybe an hour and we saw and heard…nothing. Not a single howl.
After we came up empty at the first place, we moved on to the 2nd (and last) location. We got here and settled in our spots and we waited, and waited….After about 40 minutes or so, we decided to pack it in. We had lost daylight for the most part. As soon as we all stood up, what joyful sound hit our ears? Coyote howls! Hooray! Well, it would have been hooray, except for the fact that the howls were coming from THE OTHER SIDE of the creek…Didn’t the dogs get the memo that they were supposed to be on the opposite side that day?! We responded to the howls with some eyerolls and head shakes, the coyotes didn’t seem affected.
All in all, we had a good time hanging out together. I also got this picture of the beautiful evening skyline, so all was not lost that afternoon!
Not every hunt ends up with a trophy, but as long as you were with your friends or family, have some laughs, and just plain enjoy yourself, then it is a win in my books. That’s what hunting is about after all! Getting back out there when you come back empty handed (or didn’t even see anything for that matter). If you have any tips or tricks for coyote hunting, please share them! Jade and Alan really want to get the hang of the art of coyote hunting (and I’d really like to get a neat coyote hunting picture series, selfish I know). 😉
Until next time, Happy Hunting! ~Michelle
